Arnold Helbling uses architecture’s relevance as his formal and conceptual framework for his paintings. He studies all sorts of Architectures, from actual buildings, to biological structures, to maps, to circuit boards to explore of what it means to be alive today.

His unique technique involves first applying acrylic paint to plastic sheets before transferring the dried paint skins to canvas in layers.

The material process for creating the paintings is closely linked to the conceptual evolution of the subject matter of his work.

Arnold Helbling was born in Switzerland and received his MFA at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel. He lives and works in New York since 1989.
